Imagine asking, “Alexa, what can you do here?”… in your rental car, in your hotel room or office and then being expertly guided through the navigation system, controlling the curtains, cranking the volume on the radio or adjusting the conference room lights. The Smart Home Demo team is building ways to help customers discover how to use Alexa-enabled devices in all of their environments. We want to do the same thing for the Alexa-enabled devices around you. As Alexa is supported in more everyday devices, we want to provide an easy way for customers to discover and learn about devices wherever they are, and using just their voice.

The Amazon Devices team is looking for a Principal TPM to lead this effort from early stages through release. You will work with all device product line teams, online and offline sales and marketing teams, and multiple engineering teams and lead this cross-team effort. In this role, you will be responsible for building the vision and roadmap, working with multiple business teams to define the full set of technical requirements, coordinating with multiple engineering teams in the Devices, Alexa, and AWS organizations to design, build, and deliver a common way for customers to explore functionality provided by Alexa-enabled devices. You will be expected to make appropriate tradeoffs to optimize time-to-market, clearly communicate goals, roles, responsibilities, and desired outcomes to internal cross-functional and remote project teams. This is a highly visible project across multiple organizations where you will have the opportunity to have a huge impact.

The right candidate will possess a strong technical program management background, will have demonstrated experience leading medium to large projects across multiple teams, and will want to have a lasting impact in the consumer electronics space. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment, and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities. This means you are not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done.

You must be able to communicate up, down, and out to technical and business leaders. You must be able to successfully drive a project from vision through release unblocking yourself and your teams. As a Principal TPM, you will anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints. You must be able to take large, complex projects and break them down into manageable pieces, develop functional specifications, then deliver them in a successful and timely manner. Maturity, high judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence, analytical talent and leadership are essential to success in this role.

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of Technical Program Management experience in a related industry (experience owning a program/product/feature, scoping requirements, planning milestones, project management and working with technical teams)
  • 5+ years of experience leading software development projects with aggressive schedules
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams to deliver projects with multiple dependencies and constraints

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science/Math or related field
  • Proven analytical thinking, skills in metrics creation and project management, attention to details, and exceptional organizational skills
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • High level familiarity with data mining or machine learning
  • 3+ years experience with managing other TPMs/PMs
