Job Description

We are a growing multi-disciplinary team addressing everyday customer needs through a combination of software engineering, web development, hardware development, and applied research. We are looking for a lead research scientist to conceive, prototype, evaluate, and iterate on solutions to various quantitative applied research problems, and to lead a small team of other scientists. For apparel and shoes (“softlines”), the convenience, selection, and price benefits of shopping online have yet to be fully realized. Today the online shopper faces challenges on multiple fronts: discovering interesting items in a sea of products, evaluating fit, and assessing cut and other style details.

Our team’s ultimate goal is for customers to easily discover items they will like and to get the right size on the first try: across the globe, on laptops and mobile, etc.

Our technical challenges involve hardware engineering, applied science, back-end software engineering, and user interface development. We need to build and use hardware for data capture. We need to develop and apply quantitative algorithms (e.g. machine learning, computer vision) to make recommendations. We need to build software to train models and apply them…at Amazon scale. We need to build beautiful, intuitive, responsive user interfaces that our customers will use to discover items, evaluate fit and style, and refine our understanding of their tastes.

Basic Qualifications

  • A PhD in computer science, mathematics, operations research, or a related field; or a MS or BS and equivalent experience
  • Experience developing quantitative algorithms that have shipped in production software, including;
  • (a) Experience successfully applying techniques found in the fields of machine learning/statistical learning, computer vision, collaborative filtering, information retrieval, and/or optimization, including breadth across techniques and depth in at least one technique
  • (b) Demonstrated ability to independently query data and build prototypes
  • Experience managing or leading people, including the demonstrated ability to audit and provide constructive feedback on problem specification, design of experiments, application of techniques, and evaluation of results
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver results through an R&D program, including iterative experimentation
  • Demonstrated consistency in communicating status and forward-looking plans with transparency to stakeholders, including skip-level management
  • An ability to communicate ideas effectively, to listen to others’ ideas, and to collaborate to arrive at great solutions, including effective written and oral communication skills
  • A demonstrated mindset of continuous improvement, applied to oneself and others

Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong sense of ownership, including prioritizing the most important research for customers over specific personal research interests when the two conflict
  • Experience with deep learning, topic modeling, tensor factorization, nearest neighbors approaches, and/or image processing
